From time to time you will meet the OPP. By-Law Officers and Trail Wardens on trails.
ALWAYS, park to the right, stop your engine and remove your helmet and speak politely.
Official Law Enforcement Officers wear a uniform and always have a badge. You are required by law to answer their questions and produce the legal documents needed to ride.
Trail Wardens are volunteers and have no authority to ask anything and you have no obligation to answer them. If you do not wish to answer thier questions you can politely refuse to answer or produce documents.
There is no requirement for membership in any association of any kind, including the OFTR, to ride an ORM on Crown Land in the Province of Ontario. You need to be registered, insured, sober and wearing a helmet. Children under 12 must be closely supervised by an adult.
For private property and municipal forests, only authorized law enforcement may approach you, if you are unsure, politely ask the person for identification that satisfies you as to who they are. If they can not produce that, then you are not obliged to answer them. If they become aggressive, leave safely and call the proper authorities.
If you have encountered anyone trying to impersonate enforcement illegally, try to record as much information as possible and notify the local authorities or the OFTR and we will pass it along.
